Expectations on students in order to be at the school isn’t an inherently bad one.
For one, I would grant Bishops more flexibility in determining what an expellable offense is and at the same time have the school invest in giving them proper training to be able to discern potential mental health risks. The HCO does abuse its power in a lot of cases. A kid struggling with an addiction would be much better at BYU where there are resources to help instead of following the letter of the law.
I had a friend thrown out because he screwed up and slept with his girlfriend. He felt awful about it and wanted to make it right. I don’t think he deserved to be thrown out over a mistake. If it’s a regular pattern of behavior, that’s a different story. His bishop should’ve made that call, not the HCO.
