Best snorkeling I have done there is the bay at Xcaret Park but Akumal is great
for tutles and sting rays. The water is pretty clean this year so far. Like someone else said though there are likely a ton of places in the area so just do a little online digging on forums, etc.

Getting around can be expensive as the car rentals really screw you on the insurance (the rates you see on Expedia or company web sites have nothing to do with the actual price they will charge so don’t waste your time). We’ve rented a bunch at Avis Car Rental in Playa at the Fiesta Inn location (2 blocks from 5th Ave on 15th Ave). As walk-ins we’ve gotten deals as low as $25/day including total coverage. FYI only liability is required by Mexican law but many places make you put a deposit of $3-4k if you forgoe comprehensive coverage.

The taxis are expensive if you leave Playa to go anywhere. They have “collectivos” (vans) that employees of the hotels use to get to work but anyone can take them. There is usually a small line but it’s around 120 pesos each way per person and they will stop just about anywhere along the freeway. This option is mainly for couples and won’t work if you are carrying around more than a backpack.

If you decide to find a taxi who will drive you around don’t get one on or near 5th Avenue. Walk 5 blocks inland to Avenue 30 and negotiate one there.

Also download the Whatsapp as once you find a Taxi you feel comfortable with, you can just text them there. Whatsapp is used eveeywhere down there for communicating.
