very interesting stuff and very consistent with other things I've read about killing
there's an interesting book called On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society that really delves into this and goes into the thing this soldier mentioned about the difference between killing at a distance and up close in hand to hand. Also, that the majority of PTSD issues from wars through history actually come from be forced to kill rather than being at risk of being killed.
