This discussion brought back another memory about our dog, who we actually named
"Wolf." Not very creative, I know (smile). It is actually one of my earliest memories as I would have been 3 or 4 at the time. Earlier in his life, Wolf was kicked in his rear end by a horse (the back right side as I remember). From that point on, that point on his body was extremely sensitive. He seemed fine unless he was touched there, in which case it caused him obvious pain. Not knowing this, because I had no memory of his injury occurring, there was a time in which I was petting him and I touched that spot. In a split second, he spun around, grabbed my little arm in his mouth, and pointedly stared at me for a second before he released it. It freaked me out, but he didn't actually hurt me or break the skin. It was a few years later before I realized that he was "training" me not to touch that spot - but doing it in a way that did not physically harm me.

According to the rest of my family, they also didn't train him to protect the sheep. He just did it naturally - it's like he recognized them (and us) as part of his "pack." At least that is what I have always thought. He was such an intelligent dog.
