and the more an organization relies on you, the less feasible an extended break is. If you're a replaceable cog in a machine, sure...

I think what might would would be, where feasible, for companies to schedule a 1-2 week shutdown during summer and 1-week shutdown over Christmas/New Year. The owners would of course need to be OK with a few weeks of non-productivity, but isn't that the point of a "vacation" (not just working remotely while you travel with your family, but an actual break)? Of course, some companies don't have the luxury to be able to shut down without losing clients/business.
