anything else, kind of like Terrence Malick's Tree of Life or The New World.  At some point, you just suspend your drive for a completely logical and satisfying story thread and just appreciate the emotions it invokes. 

If it doesn't invoke emotion for a viewer, though, it must feel like a miserable waste of time.
