NBA absolutely has interest in downplaying the scope/scale of Donaghy scandal
and I don't think we saw even the tip of the iceberg there. honestly, should have been an FBI organized crime investigation, rather than a simple internal audit from the NBA that miraculously cleared the NBA of all wrongdoing and pinned the blame on a lone bad wolf. it was clearly much wider and deeper than that.
so to answer your question, the NBA's scandal isn't that they encouraged referees to extend series in order to boost revenue; its that they provided cover to refs who were benefitting personally from ties to gambling and organized crime as a way to save face because a full investigation would have revealed the ineptitude and incompetence of NBA leadership.
