Besides the absolutely ear splitting pain, I usually think about a certain
single mother of 2, working full time, going to school part time, having the only car in the family not being able to be driven because the inspection people wouldn't pass it without a muffler. The muffler had fallen off (probably rusted off) and she didn't have the $150 to have it fixed. So the family had no car for months to be able to get to work, go to school, etc because the state insisted a muffler was absolutely crucial for her...but for some weird reasons, yahoos with certain trucks, cars, motorcycles can get away with making all the mufflerless noises they want to.
