I don't know of too many kids who were abused/neglected to the point of being in foster care, finally end up with their grandparents, and then go on to become the most decorated athlete in their sport of all time.
You might know of some - but I don't.
You can debate whether or not Simone is a hero (for the record - I don't think "heroes" have to be perfect. Most heroes, even in mythology, have their weaknesses and flaws) - but what is beyond debate is the fact that she is a stellar role model who has achieved more than anyone could imagine when you consider where she came from.
Im my book, she's a hero. Even if you don't want to call her a hero, only the ignorant would not see her as a great role model.
