The entire movie I was worried it was just a Christmas Story remake (spoilers)
Fortunately the ending made it a very distinct move.

And the fact that in the end he had to get a summer job to buy his Nintendo really sent a good message that Christmas isn't getting everything you ask for, or even the gift you want more than anything.
