I've known Gavin since he was a little boy. My family has known Gavin's mom for nearly 40 years. Because I watched Gavin play from a young age, I understood his vast potential. I believe he was underutilized in high school and during his first year at BYU. I was critical of his coaches because I couldn't understand why they could not fully see this potential and develop it. Well, we fully saw that potential and skill during the Utah game. I hope we will see it again, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, I woke up in the middle of night last night and my first thought was that Gavin's injury was not a bad dream but a terrible reality. I don't know where he goes from here. I know his dream was to play professional basketball someday. He certainly has the physical skills and his dream was well founded. He played for years on his AAU team that included professional players Frank Jackson and Yoeli Childs.
He is a great young man from a tremendous family. Pray for him as he makes some major decisions in his life. Life can be unfair when, in just a few seconds, our dreams can be dashed.
