Most used linups this season:
a) Conley/Mitchell/O'Neale/Bogdanovic/Gobert - 13.1 Net Rating
b) Conley/Clarkson/Ingles/Gay/Gobert - 16.9 Net Rating
c) Mitchell/Clarkson/O'Neale/Bogdanovic/Whiteside - -0.8 Net Rating
d) Mitchell/Ingles/O'Neale/Bogdanovic/Whiteside - -1.2 Net Rating
When everyone is healthy, these are Snyder's four main lineups (with a 4mpg of Forrest sprinkled in). Lineup A is the starters, Lineup B is Conley, Gobert, and the three regular bench rotation non-centers, Lineup C is the other three starters playing with Whiteside and Clarkson, and Lineup D replaces Clarkson with Ingles. For the most part, last season's lineups were pretty similar, mostly just replacing Whiteside with Favors, and Niang with Gay.
Four of the five most used lineups last season:
a) Conley/Mitchell/O'Neale/Bogdanovic/Gobert - 10.8 Net Rating
b) Conley/Clarkson/Ingles/Niang/Gobert - 15.0 Net Rating
c) Mitchell/Clarkson/O'Neale/Bogdanovic/Favors - 10.6 Net Rating
d) Mitchell/Ingles/O'Neale/Bogdanovic/Favors - 0.9 Net Rating
You'll notice that Lineup A and Lineup B (the lineups with Gobert) have actually been better this season. It is Lineup D, and especially Lineup C, that have fallen off of a cliff, which begs the question, what is the common denominator with these dropoffs? The answer: replacing Favors with Whiteside.
I'm not saying getting rid of Favors was a mistake. I'm also not saying that fixing the perimiter defense couldn't solve much of the Whiteside minutes. But the Jazz's (Jazz'? Jazz'z? Copies of the Jazz?) starters aren't the problem. Finding perimiter defenders is a must, but upgrading the backup center minutes might be the biggest thing holding the Jazz back right now.
