I get that students are attending BYU for both education and experience, but why subject yourself to standards that are more strict than temple recommend standards? Despite being a life long fan and season ticket holders, I chose to go to a different university after my mission, partially because I didn’t want to be in academic peril if I forgot to shave, or get BYU Police at my door because I had a girl at my house after midnight or room. (My mission trainer had that fun experience, when the officer saw their silhouettes in the bedroom windows. He had never even kissed a girl, was a UVU student that later graduated from BYU, and was just talking to a BYU girl) I didn’t need or want a curfew at 21.
I love BYU and love what the university represents, but a lot of the weird rules concerning housing and the honor code are archaic and need to be updated with a true honor system. I didn’t want to be constantly watching over my back because someone thought I was a little too close with a girlfriend, had a 5 0’clock shadow, or wanted to stay out later on a date. I went to BYU, as a married student, but do not see the benefit of living on campus as a single student, other than a dorm may be cheaper.
