When a student is just leaving home and still trying to figure things out, I can understand wanting the social part and order. I am down with the cafeteria and all that. I stayed in the dorms for EFY(3 years) and almost every other year for a week for youth conference. It was really fun, but it would get old with some of the rules about curfew and girls.
I wanted to live the law of charity and other church/gospel principles of faith, not because of fear of losing my academic status or someone watching and turning me in with the anonymous tattle tale boxes that are hopefully q thing of the past. I like the dynamic of family home evening groups and really having others close, but the going farther than the temple recommend and then facing an honor code council to prove my innocence if accused, is just not right to me.
If a student has an issue, they should be referred to their Bishop or whomever signed their endorsement. I am off the firm belief that if I can qualify for my recommend, my spiritual health is good enough for BYU. If it involves academic issues, cheating, ect, that should definitely be handled by the Honor Code Board, but sins and mistakes should be personally handled by their religious leader who has been called off God to that position.
