My wife preps people for surgery/medical procedures every day. Almost weekly
somebody refuses to have an IV and be sedated.

So what were their expectations coming into the hospital for surgery? Do you think that somehow being sedated wouldn't be necessary for surgery?

Quite often they end up sending the person home because they don't want to be stuck with a needle.
