She had brought back some food items from Japan. The customs inspectors are trained to look for the japanese/chinese characters for "meat" "chicken" "beef" etc. The inspector saw the character for "chicken" and told my daughter it wasn't allowed through customs. My daughter rolled her eyes and said "if you could read it says 'this goes well with chicken' but doesn't actually have chicken in it."
The inspector didn't like the attitude, fined her $300 for trying to bring prohibited items through customs then gave her the right to appeal the fine and spend 10 more days in Seattle to get it resolved, or pay on the spot and continue on home...
