Nissan Sentra seems to have the best price to mileage ratio for a smaller but
not ultra compact car if your only looking at the Japanese manufactures.
Other domestic and foreign competitors for similar value would be the Volkswagen Jetta, Hyundai Elantra, Ford Fusion or Chevy Cruise. Since I am typically buying this type of car as a pure commuter, I am partial to the Japanese cars. Spend a few thousand more and you can get the Honda Civic, or Toyota Corolla.
