I say do both as many opportunities as they can get as long as there reputable.
Why should the players limit themselves? after all BYU IS not a state school there A Private university with A national and even international alumni and fan base. I SAY Maximize that advantage don't just focus local.
But I respect your opinion. And the players definitely have time constraints. With needing to focus on school and Football first.

I think they found it appealing because they all get a piece each month and cougconnect is one off events. Or smaller
