A good exam Lachman can be much better than MRI. Should be able to tell if torn or not. MRI can be inconclusive and
Misread as well (although this this should be extremely rare with a quality MRI and competent radiologist) MRI is much better for a meniscus tears and Cartlidge injuries as well as other injuries such as posterior lateral corner collaterals etc. exam probably much better for PCL than MRI
Usually you should be able to tell on exam if the ACL is torn or not
