Plenty has been said about Zach. I want to give a shout out to Kai Nacua!

I’ll label my comments so you can skip to what you want to read. I have a lot of comments and not all of it is relevant to everyone, so...

Back story: As it so happens, the NYJ have been my 2nd favorite team since 09. I was there on my mission and found Rex Ryan to be a riot. It was fun seeing everybody have a reason to be excited about the team, too. Also, I couldn’t be a NYG fan because my #1 team is Washington. Super stoked to have the Jets draft Zach Wilson but also feel bad for Zach a bit. Hope it works out the way we all want it to work out.

Anyway, married a NY girl whose favorite color is green so the Jets were already her favorite team by default. My oldest son chose the Jets over WAS because the Jets have the cooler mascot. Again, I know he's setting himself up for a lifetime of disappointment but I guess it will build character or something. But he's gotten super into the Jets. He loves the Jets more than he loves BYU which I'm not OK with but try to not let him know that.

So he's always wanted to go to a Jets game. Their preseason game against Philly isn't super far from us so surprised him with tickets. He was so stoked!

The game / general NYJ thoughts: Being more familiar with the team and their fans than the average BYU fan, I was taking mental notes on a lot of players. Sadly, Wilson really didn't look good. I don't think he ever moved passed his first read which resulted in the INT. The scrambling brought some life into things but then, there went the knee. Sucks.

The good news is NYJ doesn't have a replacement for him so he's not going to lose the starting gig without being awful. NYJ fans like Mike White because he had 1 good game but he wasn't any good, either. Not sure why they didn't play Flacco but the 4th string kid they played generated ALL the offense for the Jets. Also, Sauce blanketed his receivers. There was only 1 ball thrown in his general area and it was not at the person he was covering.

The run game was unimpressive with the starters. No holes for Carter to run through. Hall made his own holes. May be a 1-dimensional offense which isn't a recipe for sucess given their vulnerability at QB. That may change once Brown gets more time with the o-line.

Kai Nacua: Kai's probably my 2nd favorite BYU defensive player of all time behind only KVN (recency bias). I really want him to be successful in the NFL.

Kai has altered his body to fit the LB role better. It was weird to see him so stocky when I'm used to seeing him rangy. Still, he's undersized for an NFL linebacker. Would be a great fit for a "buffalo nickel" role that's becoming more popular.

At the moment, it looks like Kai's a long-shot to make the roster. He didn't get much playing time except as a backup special teamer. Even then, I only saw him on punt returns. He got some time at LB at the tail end of the 4th quarter. That said, when he played he was always in the right position. He was never far from the ball when the Eagles ran it and never got knocked off his lane. I was surprised they didn't play him more in obvious passing downs. I imagine he would be highly capable in pass coverage for a LB. Most likely will not make the 53 unless he makes some major splashes in practice and/or the next 2 games.

Real reason I'm posting: As I mentioned, I went to the game with my son. I also went with my brother and nephew who live in Philly and are BYU fans. We went over to the NYJ tunnel after the game to try and get some autographs. Training camp is really the best time to get autographs but we wanted to try, anyway.

My son got some NYJ gear from some players which he was on cloud 9 about but no one was stopping to sign autographs. Makes sense. It's the end of their work day. They're tired. They want to go home.

However, when my nephew called out to Kai and Kai saw his BYU hat, Kai chuckled to himself and came right over. He was literally the only player to sign anything but he signed that BYU hat for my nephew with a note, "Go Cougars!"

I really hope he makes the team.
