Tuiaki’s scheme is not the problem with the defense
The problem is he doesn’t know when to use the different schemes they use or which scheme works best against a certain type of offense or in a certain game situation.

I hate rush 3 drop 8 but it has worked a few times. Just not ALL the time.

We had a great game plan against Baylor and Utah the last time we played them and beat them. We have the athletes to run schemes that work we just don’t have a coach choosing the right scheme and/or plays for the situation or attack.

So it still comes back to coaching.

Our defensive coaches have not been consistent with their game planning and play calling. Clearly they get it right most of the time but when they mess up it’s very noticeable and painful to watch.

I would also say this same issue applies to in game adjustments. They have not been very good at recognizing when the scheme they are playing isn’t working and switch to something else. Tuiaki and his staff just don’t seem to be very good at recognizing which scheme will work best against each offense we face.

Unless he suddenly figures out what the keys are to stopping or disrupting a certain style of offense we will continue to see his trademark hit or miss defense.

I will add that rush 3 has not worked as a primary scheme and should only be used in certain situations. It also seems to be weakest in 3rd and long but he keeps going to it. Did I already say I hate rush 3?

Here’s to hoping he guesses right tonight!
