Its way too conservative in its scheme and play calling. The coaches don’t have enough trust in the talent to call an aggressive style of football. As a result, we have a weak defensive culture. This erodes morale and trust from the players, and expectations and at times effort / belief in the team falters. Without a great defensive culture, its hard to recruit really good talent.
Think about how well BYU has done recruiting QBs over the years. Its because players expect BYU to be a great throwing team, even if they are not. That attracts talent on both the player and coach side. It helps us recruit better speed talent on the offensive side of the ball.
We have the opposite problem with our defense. I don’t think players look at that scheme and say…”I want to play in that system.” And it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy where we don’t have the talent to run an aggressive system and then we rinse and repeat.
