A few things:
These drives were played almost entirely on our side of the LOS. Not just the ball carrier. I’m talking about every single matchup across the line – – Cowboy vs. Coug.
Several instances of a DL getting doubled and put on skates while another gets walled off and has to give a ton of ground to get back in the play
In the Bronco 3-4, the wasn’t typically true. We often had a nose tackle that could collapse the OL and force a double behind the LOS, cut off the play’s intended trajectory, etc. Khyris could do this too. It was almost completely missing from this D on the initial drives.
4 games in, I often have no idea who we have on the DL. We play sooooo many dudes. Literally people I’ve never heard of getting a good chunk of reps
We’re putting Batty and Litui in 2 pt stances where linebackers line up. No idea why. On the plays I noticed this, both were way too slow to react, made easy targets for blockers, and were part of plays where we gave up big yards vs. the run
There are dudes that simply don’t make tackles and/or plays. I’d rather not see them on the field
Did I mention the game is played on our side of the LOS? Cuz through the first half, it was.
We lucked out on the 3rd possession when The Cowboys passed incomplete on 3rd and 5 and punted from about midfield. If they’d gone at us twice with the run, I don’t see us having stopped them.
We did go to as many as 5 down linemen and 6 defenders on the LOS. Still very little penetration off the snap, if any, but we did seem slightly harder to block.
If I were an opponent with anything close to the capability to do so, I’d spread BYU out and go right at us, looking to gash us inside and/or bounce it to the sideline, then hit them with rollouts and/or play action
One other thing: Jaren Hall has been an exceptional
QB and leader, and our receivers may be even better and deeper than advertised. Their play kept us in it while we were getting pushed around in the trenches.
