Hot take that isn’t very hot: the Jazz need to focus on being more terrible.
I’m annoyed at how much Jazz management is talking about how their primary goal is to rebuild their culture, or that the Olynyk deal was to add another good locker room guy. Hopefully its just generalmanagerspeak. Sorry, but your first priority should be to lose basketball games. I’m fine with coaches and players doing their best to win games, but it is Ainge and Zanik’s job to put together a team that is winning less than 25 games this year.

I’ve heard the flatter lottery odds being brought up as a reason to not totally bottom out, but that ignores the fact that the team with the worst record is guaranteed picking no worse than fifth, the second worst record sixth, and so on. Even with the new lottery odds, the teams with the worse records still have the advantage.

Trade guys like Clarkson, Beasley, and Conley for anything you can get, so long as it doesn’t require bringing back long-term money. Sexton, Vanderbilt, and Markkanen are a little bit younger and more promising, but the odds they’re still around when the Jazz are winning playoff series aren’t good. Trade them if a decent offer comes.

Be terrible this season, draft a great prospect, and do it again next year. From that point you can make a few signings or trades to add good veterans, but don’t try to accelerate your championship window. It doesn’t have to get to Philadelphia process levels, but nobody wants to be the Kings either.
