Very end of a half, only seconds left, with a punt to around mid-field. Such an instance only comes around but so often. If there's more time on the clock most coaches are going to want to first, get into better range, and second, burn some clock so they don't have to kick off again.
In my last high school game the coaches had actually talked about it earlier in the season with the kicker. Then right before the half it happened, a punt to mid-field with only seconds on the clock. They had our returner fair catch it and our kicker made what was at the time, a state record 63 yard field goal off the tee. The other team was as confused as it gets. We ended up winning that game by 2 pts.
