Those accomplishments for both teams came when both were disadvantaged relative to teams in power conferences.
The two Rose bowls come with them having significantly higher advantages in money, access, and recruiting. We can't sulk about those--Utah is cashing in on why you want to be in a power conference. I hope that we can make something out of it too.
What we do with our newfound money, access, and recruiting is where the next round of comparisons should be. And they have a headstart--it took Utah over a decade to take their windfall and make something of it. We'll probably need that long as well.
