Our son was barely 11 years old. Sudden onset of severe OCD/eating disorders/anxiety etc. Had multiple strep infections before. We didn't get the help we needed. The doctor told us that PANDAS wasn't really a thing. Now there is more research and general acceptance in the medical community that PANDAS is a real thing - infection causing sudden inflammation and then damage to the areas around basal ganglia in the brain. Treatment is usually quick dosing with antibiotics.
*It is important to get him into see someone quickly!* In some cases, antibiotics can completely reverse the symptoms, but it has to happen early in the onset.
We probably learned about PANDAS too late to benefit from the antibiotic treatment anyway, but I wish the research had been more widely understood and accepted. Unfortunately, I haven't kept up with all the current research. Perhaps there are new things that can be done.
Our son is doing better, but still struggles with OCD and anxiety.
