AAU, Academic cabals, Altimore, and Taliban State U
This video (90 minutes of Altimore) is at times informative, interesting, and infuriating… but always dripping with his academic elitism and “know it all” persona.
I had been looking into the AAU’s shocking move to add SIX schools all at once and went down a rabbit hole yesterday that led me to the video.
I posted a 15 tweet thread about the AAU’s move, Altimore’s brazen claims that:
1) Conference voting blocks played a role in Miami/ND being added
2) he’s long been suggesting to ASU that AAU membership should be their price for staying in the PAC10
I also highlight some of his shady charts and techniques to make the Big12 look as bad as possible.
Those who have heard him speak about BYU before know who he’s referring to when he mentions “The American version of Taliban State U”
And he said he decided to use NCs from 85 forward in his metrics because of “SMU’s controversial NCs in the early 80s…” not because BYU’s NC in ‘84 would show up in his chart…sure buddy. (FYI, there’s no real controversy, the Ponies were never legitimate NCs then, even with all the cheating)
Thought many here on CB would be interested in this ongoing saga.
Yeah, SIX new AAU adds at once took A LOT of people by surprise
Been speculation of quid pro quos on votes which would be sad
A '14 brief from "New America Foundation" showed ASU & USF as very strong adds, but it's murky after that
