To me that revealed something amiss in either the relationships, or Pope's character, or both. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, and it's standard procedure in this arena, but that seems very unusual.

I would always feel a personal responsibility to tell my employer I was leaving on my own. Give them an opportunity to ask questions and in general just say good bye.
