Do you start a coaching search first off after a permission call?

Seems like your first call would be a call to see what the coach (Mark Pope in this case) is thinking, and if you can retain him.

Since they started an immediate search, it seemed to me it was a revelation that they had hired Mark Pope, and the deal was done.
