You are identifying that particular tribe as “Utah” or “ALUFs”.
In reality, the state of Utah creates an interesting tribal battle against the church. It’s not a Utah specific group. It’s a group of people that don’t really like or appreciate the church or BYU. There are many of these people at Utah. Why? Not because they couldn’t get in to BYU, but rather because that’s not their tribe. Perhaps some are bitter at their exclusion, but most desire something different.
Utah is the big state school for a huge variety of people. For those who aren’t fans of the church, where would they go? Utah State? UVU? Of course not. The best option there is Utah.
And yet there are so many pro church people at Utah as well. They accept they are at a diverse institition with some who don’t see eye to eye with their values and beliefs. And you know what? They get along.
You make the mistake of lumping these people together as “Utah”. It’s just a group of people within the University who found their tribe. They aren’t bound by church standards and that’s totally fine. I’m glad they can find a place with like minded people, just like other kids from all over the country.
But you’re painting a broad brush and enlarging the tribe. Just like a liberal would call all conservatives MAGA (just one example). By putting all your opposition in one tribe, it’s far easier to hate them or justify your own bad behavior or words towards them.
