We haven't had any serious info as to who could be the candidates for assistant coaches to KY, so it's time to do some internet sleuthing. I'm hoping to cast a wide net (very wide) and narrow it down based on career trajectory and how long they worked with KY. I linked to the only serious insider info we've got so far.
Assistant Coach #1: Brandon Dunson. It's happening. Multiple people have said it will. Just a matter of time.
1-2 NBA guys:
Gene Cross: Was assistant coach to KY at the Utah flash in 2010-2011. Currently working as the Director, Scouting & Administration for the New York Knicks. (Not likely)
John Beckett: Assistant coach with KY at 87ers from 2013-2014. Currently assistant coach under Mike Malone with the Nuggets. (Not likely)
Doug Stewart: Assistant coach for KY at 87ers in 2014-2015. Moved from G league to college in 2016 to be an assistant coach in Oregon state. Currently an associate head coach at Tulane. Has NBA and College experience. (Possible)
John Bryant: Assistant coach for KY at 87ers in 2014-2015. Moved with KY to the 76ers as a player development coach. Was an assistant coach for the 76ers from 2016-2018. Went to the Bulls in 2020 and has been there as an assistant ever since. (Not likely)
Loyd Pierce: Head coach over KY for 76ers in 2016-2018. Left to coach the hawks and is currently an assistant for the pacers (Not Likely)
Billy Lange: Assistant coach with KY for 76ers from 2016-2019. Current Head coach of Saint Joseph's. Has NBA and college experience. (Not Likely)
Rod Baker: Head coach over KY for 87ers in 2013. Scout for 76ers from 2015-2020. G league Ignite assistant coach from 2021-2022. This is an NBA guy who knows what it takes to make it to the NBA and could help develop BYU players into NBA players. He does not currently have a job. (Probable)
Splash hire?:
There was a hint that KY could be offering someone who would be a splashy hire. This list could include a lot of people, so I'm just going to list college basketball head coaches who don't have a job and their rankings.
Jay Wright (no)
Tom Cream (no)
Bob Huggins (no)
Juan Howard (no)
Mike Hopkins (probably not)
Jerry Stackhouse (neutral): Jerry stackhouse was coaching in the g league when KY was also in the g league. I'm not saying it'd be likely, but it'd be a splashy hire with an NBA connection that could help KY develop BYU players into NBA guys. I don't know what his history is or if he'd be a good fit for BYU, but he's an NBA guy that'd be a splashy hire and, to my knowledge, he doesn't have a job yet.
Wild Cards:
Eric Mika: I don't see this happening, maybe as a grad assistant but IDK if he even graduated from BYU and if he's eligible to be a GA. If he's eligible, I'd take him. But I don't think he has any connections to KY.
GA job (neutral)
