Negative LDS research is an extremely minor research area that only affects a few history researchers. Overall, based on an objective assessment by the NWCCU (the same body that judges the academic freedom of all Washington and Oregon schools), we have passed the same standard for freedom that all other schools do.
And this is after several very loud voices asked the NWCCU to pay particularly close attention to several areas of academic freedom concern at BYU.
Let me give you another example. At a previous university, I did a research study that indicated that 70% of the students were actively cheating. That school shut down the study and wouldn't let us publish the results. That's at least as bad as what you're talking about with BYU. And that school is super proud of their academic freedom in the PAC12
