They work pretty well at keeping the front of your shirt clean while eating. The more expensive the tie, the more likely it will catch whatever you spill on yourself.

And that's not all. Ties also make excellent wind socks. Your tie will always tell you which way the wind is blowing when you are walking outside.

So don't try to tell me they serve no functional purpose!
