According to the organization making a fuss about this, BYU really doesn't look
at the circumstances. I won't claim to know how it all works, but according to the voices making noise about this issue, name removal = kicked out of school. Which is to say that the Baptist who converts to Islam (who, you explained, would have to get a new endorsement, but would not be kicked out of school) is different from the Mormon who has his name removed and converts to Islam (this person can't just got get anew Islamic endorsement -- he gets kicked out for having his name removed).

And maybe that's fine. But a lot of people here are trying to say that it's the same treatment, when it's not. Name removal is viewed as a unique action that results in unique consequences, regardless of other circumstances. Name removal doesn't have to be accompanied by anything else -- like vocal bad-mouthing or the failure to get another endorsement -- to result in removal from school. It's enough in and of itself.
