I actually only knew one person who started LDS at BYU, stopped going to church,

And then a few years later decided to finish their degree (they were still a year or two away from graduating). He talked to a bishop, was completely honest that he didn't believe it but that he wanted to finish. The bishop told him if he attended regularly he would give his endorsement.
