I don't think BYU will get into the Big 12. And it has nothing to do with athletics, geography, Sunday play, religion or scandal. I don't think we'll get in for one reason and one reason only:
Nothing this good ever happens to BYU.
We lost out on the first round of Big 12 expansion, Utah was snatched up by the Pac 12, we lost three VB national championships (two men, one women), we're working on a five-game losing streak to Utah, our best football recruit in decades turned out to be a huge bust, our best sprinter in school history was disqualified at Olympic trials due to a blown ruling, blah blah blah. Even Jimmer, the greatest thing to happen to BYU since Ty Detmer, was derailed in the most BYU way ever by Brandon Davies and the Honor Code.
We just have a way of getting to the doorstep, and falling flat on our faces. And I'm just sure it's going to happen again.
BYU is by far the most qualified, deserving school among expansion candidates. There is no question whatsoever. BYU is a P5 school through and through, and we belong in the P5 world, competing at that level (in all sports). And yet, it's very easy for me to picture the Big 12 looking BYU up and down at our great fanbase, great facilities, great tradition, great potential and saying "Meh... let's go with Memphis."
