If we don't finish ranked this year. And those two seasons were

1) the COVID season
2) the post-COVID season when the PAC was still very much in hangover mode

I know people here get frustrated with me sharing stats that don't always paint the BYU football program in a positive light...but I'm pretty sure it's much more damaging to keep pretending that the status quo is fine.

I'd like to get up to finishing Top 25 as often as not. And that's absolutely doable. Over their last 20 (non-COVID) years, Utah has finished ranked 10 times. But right now I'd like to get to finishing ranked 1 of every 3 years.

And none of this is necessarily an indictment on Kalani either (since I know he's the original topic of discussion). I'm not an expert on causes and WHY things are turning out this way....but I can pretty clearly say something needed (or still needs) to change.

It's tough to assess Kalani because so much of it depends on how much credit you give to those COVID-impacted seasons. If they're completely legitimate, he built a program up to high level but has had a rough year in transition. Or you can look at him as a guy who inherited a 9-4 program and has been basically downhill when not aided by a once-a-century pandemic. I think it's hard to tell which of those is true, so he gets more time based on that uncertainty.

But like I said, something needs to change. Maybe it was Kalani coming in and improving things and the last season was a blip. Maybe it was the conference affiliation and it's already changed. But we have to see some large impact from that in the next few seasons or it's going to be a necessity to change a different major factor. And there's only so many things you can easily change before you get to the coach
