to alter the bowl in which tie-ins exist.
In the past BYU has improved the bowl they attended vs. where they were tied into. The Cotton Bowl is a perfect example. Before the BCS, BYU was tied into their conference bowl game. But being ranked 5th they were able to buy themselves out of the conference tie-in and play in the Cotton Bowl.
This happened with the Tangerine Bowl and I believe the Motor City Bowl.
Conferences will shift bowl games provided they are compensated and given an alternative choice. It does happen.
