According to my BIL who is in marketing at Nike, each school negotiates

with Nike and there are different tiers...the top tier - maybe 10 schools - the ones you would expect - actually get nearly all the gear for free.

Middle tier schools like BYU have to pay for the gear but at a steeply discounted price.

Lower tier pays for their own gear (still discounted, but not as much)...

Not sure how Adidas structures deals, but prolly similarly.
