points off of plays that are irregularities--the special team scores, the defensive scores, trick plays--can't be considered. Sure they count for that game and who eventually wins or looses, but if you want to know how a team will fare all season long, then they have to be able to score consistently on sustained drives, on plays 20 yards or shorter.
If a team had all the points like Houston did last year from a KO return, int, and safety, then they need to finish the game with 60+ points to validated they are really good, because otherwise, they only scored 20-25 points that can be depended on week in, week out, and that will not be enough to win the majority of the time, especially against good competition.
