and us #31 which I thought was interesting. Especially compared to UCF at #48.
I never really gave them another thought because:
1. It's a home game and our home opener. And we usually come out firing for our home opener.
2. We beat them last year and I remember thinking during the game "This shouldn't be close." and it was.
3. Houston is an AAC member, formally a Conf USA member. I refuse to be scared of former Conf USA members, or current AAC members.
4. Again, it's our home opener. We'll be fine.
Then I re-watched the game and a couple of things stood out:
1. That QB is good.
2. Those guys are fast.
3. They won't go away.
4. Dang, we really could have lost that game.
Then when Freddie Cougar posted those ESPN rankings and Houston is right up there I started thinking, "Who is going to be better than them in the AAC or MWC? Not UCF (my reasons above), not Boise State (maybe, but new coach and all that make them a '?'), not Fresno State (lost QB).. I think Houston is the best of the rest. And when you have athletes on the outside with a legit QB, you're going to be dangerous. And this Houston game wasn't really on my radar.
I don't buy all the "they were lucky" and "no way they are that good" stuff because they played a really good UCF team very well and lost 19-14. We score 47 and Bortles and co. who destroyed Baylor can only put up 19? Then they played Bridgewater and co. from Louisville tight as well, lost 20-13. Do I really believe that our Offense is more than twice as good as Louisville or UCF last year? No way. If they were lucky to put up 46, we were lucky to put up 47.
It was a crazy game and I doubt it's that way this year at LES, but I don't like the idea of a 19-14 game with those guys either.
