Having earned a living playing sports before moving into my current profession
It was somewhat known that managers kept two schedules.

1) The first schedule was posted in the locker room with specific teams being circled (the big games and rivalries)

2) The second schedule was hidden usually in the manager's office. This schedule often had different teams circled than the schedule found in the locker room. The hidden schedule had teams the manager felt were must wins in order to keep his job.

I do not know if Kyle keeps the same set of schedules. But during the Edwards' tenure, it was suggested that Utah's coaches felt if they could defeat BYU they would safe and their season would be made, despite the overall record. Edwards was asked about emphasis placed on certain teams. Edwards explained he approached every game the same and wanted his teams to do the same - business like with no ups or downs.

That philosophy served him well. If BYU lost a big game, it was business as usual the next week. However, teams that get up whether experiencing a win or loss, it makes it more difficult for them to play with the same intensity the following week(s).

IMO: Utah's recent success has been placing a higher emphasis on the BYU games vs. BYU on the Utah games; thus, giving them the edge for the games against BYU. This is also in part again IMO that Utah has suffered in their overall record. Granted they have played a strong schedule which impacts wins and losses.
