Is there a primary reason?
BYU vs. Utah is usually a poorly played, penalty riddled, poorly coached crapfest of a game with exciting finishes. If I wasn't a BYU fan, I would probably not watch this game. There seem to be 3 themes to me as far as why Utah has been able to win: Turnovers, Pass efficiency, and big plays from scrimmage.

Turnovers in each of those games:

2010 BYU 4 Utah 3
2011 BYU 7 Utah 2
2012 BYU 2 Utah 0
2013 BYU 1 Utah 0

Pass efficiency ratings in each of those games:

2010 BYU 114.74 Utah 80.24
2011 BYU 107.34 Utah 131.21
2012 BYU 105.15 Utah 152.09
2013 BYU 78.83 Utah 152.95

Big Plays from scrimmage:

2010 BYU 28 yard pass play to Jacobson. Utah 60 yard pass play to Brooks
2011 BYU pass to Hoffman for 37 yards; pass to Apo for 32 yards. Utah 62 yard run from White. 59 yard pass to Anderson.
2012 BYU pass to Hoffman for 47 yards. Touchdown Pass to Anderson for 39 yards
2013 BYU rush by Hill for 41 yards; pass to Hoffman for 32 yards. Utah rush by Poole for 65 yards. Pass to Anderson for 74 yards.

Utah has won the turnover battle in every game. There has been a substantial pass efficiency differential in all games with Utah having the advantage 3 out of 4 times. And the biggest mismatch in the rivalry is Dres Anderson vs. our secondary.
