The solution is a 10-team CFP, with automatic berths for the top-5 (regardless of conference championships or affiliation), then preference to conference champions after that, and a play-in round for a couple of at larges and a couple of outside conference champions - kind of like the NCAA basketball play-in round.
This system rewards conference champions - which not only maintains the importance of the regular season, but enhances it! And, it allows most top-8 teams to be included, so that non-champs still have plenty to play for (again, enhancing the regular season) and to keep quality CFP matchups.
For example, 2013:
PLAY-IN ROUND
December 13-14, 2013
7-seed game: (8)Missouri (at large) v. (7) Ohio St.(at large), at Columbus, OH
8-seed game: (21)Fresno St. (MWC) v. (15)UCF (AAC), at Orlando, FL
[Alternatively, you could hold these two games at the same neutral venue on back-to-back nights, but the powers-that-be would need to determine whether that is feasible. I suggest that Las Vegas would be a decent venue for this kind of event - you could fill the stadium with college football fans, regardless of who is playing]
ROUND 1
December 20-21, 2013
8-seed winner v. (1)Florida St.(ACC), at Tallahassee, FL
7-seed winner v. (2)Auburn(SEC), at Auburn, AL
(6)Baylor (Big 12) v. (3)Alabama(at large), at Tuscaloosa, AL
(5)Stanford (PAC 12) v. (4)Michigan St.(B1G), at E. Lansing, MI
Then, it simply spills into the current CFP structure
