10,000 credits seems to be the sweet spot.
That gives you a week every year in a 2-bedroom unit in most places that will sleep 6. (or a full week to trade like QuickCoug does) Some (but not many) have extra big 2-bedroom units that sleep 8, but don't count on it. If you want to sleep 8, you will need a 3-bedroom unit that is usually 12,000 credits.

In the past decade, Worldmark has built several new properties that require significantly more credits. (Anaheim is 16,000 for a 2-bedroom). These higher credit resorts are probably only 10-20% of the total properties, but it is an issue.

I would recommend doing a 10,000 credit membership and then getting extra credits when you need to sleep 8. You can get extra credits by borrowing from next years credits (that's allowed under the rules), renting extra credits from another member (not very hard to do) or paying a fee to get the extra credits for a particular stay.

You pay maintenance fees based on the number of credits you own, so 12,000 credits will cost more than 10,000 credits every year.
