But, there wasn't much tailgating. There's a big charity BBQ on the quad and everything is on campus. They even have religion classes/speakers. And, they have volunteers and the main campus entrances, actually handing out programs to passersby. The programs have a campus map on one side and highlight the various events and show start times, locations, etc. on the other.
BYU ought to do something similar. They could have on-campus activities and events leading up to kickoff. There are a lot of talented Cougars that could perform and share their talents - Polynesian and folk dance teams, Studio C, men's chorus, etc. You could even have a devotional in the Marriott Center - or at least the JSB. (but don't have it too close to kickoff )Or have Lavell or Ty or other former player or coach speak.
Have a BBQ in the Wilk or one of the quads while the different clubs/performances entertain. Move the events progressively closer to LES.
About an hour before kickoff, have the band percussion give a performance on the steps by the Victory Bell. Then you could follow the marching band to LES.
BYU could do a lot of cool LDS-ish things on gameday. It would fit into the LDS and BYU culture much better than tailgating.
