I've done it and have seen others do it. Our sport was Hockey and I always thought there would be long term benefits. No scholarships earned but it was the deciding factor in getting accepted into a top school.......and established a connection that lead to first job out of college....not a bad return.

However he had a lot more fun playing on recreational teams than the more elite teams.
