That's funny because that's how Oregon counters it. Oregon will run the zone
read and balance it out with the bubble screens (usually out of trips right or left). They do that all day long to spread the defense as far as they can, which opens up passing lanes for seam routes.

Running the bubble screen is NOT playing into a defense that is stacking the box, but is actually doing the opposite. When you stack the box, you're committing your linebackers (and best tacklers) to the run. Your dbs are on their own and, typically, they're going to play back (unless you're running blitz packages that require man press to take away the quick hits).

You throw the bubble screen to:

1. Pit a great, quick playmaker against the defense's weakest tacklers.
2. Spread the defense, especially if they are stacking the box.
3. Commit the safeties to cheat up to open up the long ball.

Many are saying the bubble screen won't work because the dbs will be pressing, but that's not true. Defenses don't press trips unless those trips are spread. The bubble screen is usually run out of stacked or staggered trips. Defenses don't play press against this because they'll get picked with crossing routes which opens up quick hits and passes over the top. Also, Virginia typically pressed one db on each play and it was usually the corner on Leslie or Matthews. Matthews would be on an island playing x which would also require a little bit of safety help, pulling dbs even further away from the bubble screen.

The best way to have run it against virginia would have been in single back formation with x wide, and trips right stacked with 2 on and one off. With the way they schemed, Virginia would not have pressed anyone except the X in this scenario.

The play will work. Run it a few times and it will open up passing lanes and also the run game.
