Have you checked the subnet/gateway of the printer?
Is it possible when you set it up you were connected to the VPN so it gave itself the wrong gateway?
When it's connected to the VPN, can you web into the console and check network settings? If you can't can you print off the network settings from the on screen menu? You should also be able to just display them there as well.
